Author Ramon D. 'Ray' Hansen's New Book '30- My Newspaper Life' is the Compelling Memoir of an Old-School Newspaperman Reflecting Upon a Career Spanning Seven Decades

Ramon D. "Ray" Hansen, a retired reporter, editor and newspaper publisher, has completed his fourth book which covers almost seven decades of his remarkable newspaper career. "30 --- MY NEWSPAPER LIFE," was recently released by Page Publishing Company, New York City.

Mr. Hansen, a native of Bloomfield, Nebraska, grew up in the years of the Great Depression then enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 after reading what the Japanese did to American captives during the Bataan Death March. He spent the war years in the Seabees building airbases on the island of Guam.

Upon returning from overseas, he immediately enrolled at the University of Nebraska School of Journalism. Working nights at the Lincoln Star, he graduated in three years, on D-Day, 1949.

In 1950, a job covering the U.S. Senate took him to Washington, D.C. He spent 10 years in Washington, during which time he saved $10,000. He took that money to Wisconsin and bought his first newspaper, which he printed with hot lead, via Linotype and a flat-bed press. After five years, he sold the newspaper for more than twice what he had paid for it.

Then came the offset revolution with cold type and expensive web presses. Hansen details his career that followed on newspapers in Nebraska, Indiana, Kansas, Arkansas, and finally in New York, where in his later years he managed a weekly for a small chain of dailies.

In all, he owned two weekly newspapers, one semi-weekly and one small daily. In his book, he tells what it was like to make a newspaper successful in the turbulence of the times while also raising a family. His story is told with flair and honesty and would be most valuable to young people contemplating a career in the weekly newspaper field.

Readers who wish to experience this engaging work can purchase “30- My Newspaper Life” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes Store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes & Noble.
